Courses

The GRiT is an adventure gravel ride. The courses will be on asphalt, dirt/gravel roads, with some double track sections. These courses are long and difficult, but doable by anyone with a spirit of adventure and some stamina. The Maximus is… well… a brute.

The descents can be tricky at high speed. Keep your speed in check and all will be well. We encourage you to pre-ride. The courses are published. Get out there and ride them.

We have four courses to choose from this year:

  • Maximus – Latin for “greatest,” to signify the ultimate challenge
    • 63 miles
    • 7,100 feet of climbing
  • Fortis – Latin for “strength” – this course is no gimme.
    • 42 miles
    • 4,700 feet of climbing
  • Velox – Latin for speed and agility.
    • 31 miles
    • 3,100 feet of climbing
  • Primus – Latin for first – a great course for first timers.
    • 20 miles
    • 1,300 feet of climbing

There will be a neutral roll-out of approximately 2 miles.

Categories

For each course & distance we have the following categories:

  • Open women
  • Open men
  • Non-binary
  • Masters women (50+)
  • Masters men (50+)
  • Junior women (17 and under)
  • Junior men (17 and under)
  • (Almost) anything goes – ebikes, tricycles, etc

Notes:

  • Your racing age is the age you are on the day of the race.
  • Our (Almost) anything goes category is a recreational category for e-bikes or whatever two wheeled contraption you want to ride. E-bikes, tandems, unicycles, tricycles allowed. At least 1 wheel, no throttles, no podium.

Registration cost

Registration pays for the permits, administrative costs, insurance, rental equipment, and a utilikilt for the race director.

  • Maximus – $120
  • Fortis – $100
  • Velox – $80
  • Primus – $60

In addition to the registration fee, all riders will need a timing chip. You may use your own yellow timing chip (from MFG) or older “snorkel” type timing tube–the ones that are used at many Seattle bike races. If you have a timing chip, please bring it! If not, we will have them for you for a $10 deposit. You can either keep the chip or return it for your $10 back if you are saving your money for a new gravel bike.

Refunds:

  • Full refund (minus Webscorer fees) before 5pm Friday June 19
  • After 5pm 6/19 you may transfer your race registration to next year or transfer to someone else.

Podiums & Awards

You made the podium! Congrats! We’ll celebrate your hard work and give you a chance to share the moment on TikTok.

We will have a podium presentation to award the top three finishers for each ride length and category. Podiums will be near the start/finish. Published times will be pushed back if there are podium finishers still arriving.

Podium times

Podium times are approximate. When all racers who are on the podium are present we will do the podium presentations.

  • Primus:
    • Adults & Juniors: 11:00 am
  • Velox:
    • Adults: 12:00 pm
    • Juniors: 12:30 pm
  • Fortis:
    • Adults: 1:00 pm
    • Juniors: 1:30 pm

Aid Stations

We have two aid stations. Our aid stations will put a smile on your face and refuel you in your lowest moments of the ride.

The primary aid station (Aid1) is at the intersection of NW Forest roads 5480 and 5483, (right near where NW-5480 crosses the Palouse to Cascades trail.) Velox riders will pass Aid1 twice, and Fortis and Maximus riders will pass Aid1 3 times. Primus riders won’t pass either aid station.

At Aid1, we will have:

  • Food, water, lots of other goodies
  • First Aid & a medic
  • Neutral mechanic
  • Smiles & hugs

The second aid station (Aid2) is at mile 55 of the Maximus course at the top of the last, grueling climb on NW Forest Road 4948.

At Aid2, we will have:

  • Water & some bars/gels to get you home
  • Smiles & hugs

Drop Bags

Riders are welcome to leave a drop bag at registration—we’ll deliver it to the aid stations for you! Just make sure your bag is fully enclosed, clearly labeled with your name and which Aid Station it is meant for and ready to go before you roll out. We will return the bags to the start/finish area. Bags for Maximus riders going to Aid2 will be picked up at the end of the day by our course sweep crew, so will not be back at the start/finish until 4pm or so. If you plan to drop a bag for Aid 2, you should either use a disposable bag or plan to hang out until 4pm or 5pm.

Lodging

There are not an abundant number of lodging options at Snoqualmie Pass itself, but plenty of places to stay within a 30 minute drive.

  • AirBNB – there are a few AirBNB options at Snoqualmie Pass. If you want to stay at the pass, this might be your best option.
  • Cle Elum or North Bend hotels – there are numerous hotel options available either west or east of Snoqualmie Pass in the towns of North Bend or Cle Elum.
  • Camping – there is lots of camping available along the I90 corridor near Snoqualmie Pass. Unfortunately, there is not camping available at the venue.
  • Vanlife & RVs – pick your spot! If you’ve got a van or RV there are numerous places nearby to park and camp.

Other Details you can mostly ignore

Helmets: Wear a helmet.

Sanctioning: Our event is not USA Cycling sanctioned. No license necessary!

Doping: We don’t check but you are an idiot if you are doping or using some illegal substance to help you go faster. The GRiT is for fun and healthy exercise. We’ll ban you from all Off Camber Productions races if you are caught doping at any other event.

Pre-riding: We encourage you to pre-ride the course!

Numbers & Chips: We aren’t talking Doritos, we are talking about timing chips. Attach the chip to your helmet. You can pick up your timing chip at packet pickup. You can use the same chip (either yellow rubber chip or snorkel type tube) that you use at MFG Cyclocross and/or other Seattle area bike races. We’ll provide rubber bands and zip ties. Number plates should be attached to the front of your handlebars.

Timing: The GRiT is a mass start event, meaning that the timing starts when the starter sends your wave off. When you cross the finish line, your time is recorded.

Results: Results are available on Webscorer and are posted almost immediately after you cross the finish. Yes. It’s like magic. Download the Webscorer app for the easiest access.

Contested Results: If you believe the results on Webscorer are incorrect please report to the start/finish line within one hour of the completion of your race and talk to one of us.
